VTR Vietnam's 8-step market development process

Research the right market • Reach the right customers • Connect with the right people • Build lasting business relationships

Entering a new market does not begin with simply having a large customer list. What matters more is understanding the market, identifying the right target companies, reaching the right decision-makers, and maintaining engagement long enough to turn a potential lead into a real business opportunity.

VTR Vietnam has developed an eight-step market development process to help international companies progressively understand the Vietnamese market, identify the right customers, validate demand, establish meaningful connections, and develop long-term business relationships.

VTR Vietnam's 8-step market development and business matching process

01. UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS BEFORE LOOKING AT THE MARKET

Every effective market approach must begin with the company's own capabilities and objectives.

VTR clarifies the company’s products, competitive advantages, supply capabilities, existing customer groups, and expectations in Vietnam. A manufacturer seeking distributors requires a different roadmap from a company looking for OEM partners, EPC contractors, direct-use factories, or strategic partners. Defining the business challenge correctly from the outset helps avoid unfocused research and establishes clear criteria for the entire outreach process. This approach means VTR does not begin by asking, “How many customers are there?” Instead, it focuses on the more important questions: Which customers are genuinely relevant, and why should they be interested in the company?

02. READ THE MARKET TO IDENTIFY THE RIGHT “ENTRY POINT”

A market with demand is not necessarily a market that is easy to enter.

VTR studies industry structure, demand trends, supply chains, companies currently purchasing or using the product, competitors, and factors that may influence purchasing decisions. The objective is not to produce a data-heavy report, but to turn data into decisions: which segments should be prioritized, who should be approached first, and which messages are most likely to generate a response. The value of market research therefore lies not in the number of report pages, but in its ability to identify a sufficiently clear market entry point that enables the company to take action.

03. TURN PRODUCT ADVANTAGES INTO REASONS FOR CUSTOMERS TO ENGAGE

Effective materials should do more than introduce a company; they should help customers quickly understand the value proposition and why a business conversation is worth starting.

Based on the information, profiles, and materials provided by the company, VTR selects and organizes the most relevant content for approaching target customers in Vietnam. Rather than presenting too much information at the first point of contact, VTR focuses on what matters to each customer group, such as company capabilities, product categories, applications, key advantages, and potential areas of cooperation. The presentation is also adapted to each outreach channel and audience. The objective is not to replace the company’s technical assessment or modify technical product specifications, but to transform the information provided into clear, focused outreach content that facilitates the start of a business discussion.

04. BUILD A CUSTOMER DATABASE WITH CONVERSION POTENTIAL

A large database does not necessarily mean a promising market.

VTR screens companies using multiple criteria, including industry, products, scale, location, role in the supply chain, commercial activities, and overall relevance. The database is then segmented to identify priority outreach groups. This enables resources to focus on companies with a suitable business context rather than distributing information indiscriminately. Following this logic, accounts progress from Target Account to Qualified Account and Priority Account, placing quality and conversion potential above the sheer number of contacts.

05. OUTREACH TO START A DIALOGUE, NOT JUST SEND INFORMATION

Email, phone, LinkedIn, and Zalo are only channels; effectiveness depends on reaching the right person with the right message at the right time.

VTR personalizes its outreach approach according to each customer group and the recipient’s role. The initial objective is not to force a purchasing decision, but to generate meaningful responses: a request for additional documents, a discussion with the technical team, confirmation of a need, or agreement to a meeting. At that point, a contact in a database begins to become a meaningful lead. In practice, one relevant response from the right person can be more valuable than hundreds of messages that fail to create a dialogue.

06. VERIFY WHICH LEADS ARE REAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Not every response carries the same business value.

Once a customer responds, VTR further clarifies the need, application, level of fit, expected timeline, decision-making participants, and the next practical step. This qualification process helps companies avoid allocating excessive resources to contacts that are not yet ready while focusing more deeply on opportunities with genuine potential to progress. The key measure at this stage is therefore not the number of meetings, but the number of meetings where the need, business context, and commercial rationale are clear enough for both parties to move forward.

07. BUSINESS MATCHING - TURN A MEETING INTO FORWARD PROGRESS

A business connection creates value only when both parties understand what needs to be discussed and what should happen next.

Before each meeting, VTR helps clarify needs and prepare the necessary content so discussions can focus directly on valuable topics such as technical specifications, quotations, samples, cooperation terms, and implementation feasibility. After the meeting, outcomes are translated into a specific “next action” rather than ending with an exchange of business cards. An effective Business Matching meeting should therefore lead to concrete actions such as Sample Submission, Quotation, Technical Meeting, Factory Visit, Trial Order, or Negotiation, rather than stopping at information exchange.

08. MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS SO OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUE AFTER THE MEETING

In B2B, the real value often begins after the first meeting.

A cooperation decision may require several rounds of evaluation. VTR continues to follow up on feedback, support additional documentation, connect relevant departments, and maintain the communication rhythm. At the same time, customer signals are fed back into the research process to refine the target database, messaging, and outreach direction. Market development therefore becomes a continuous cycle of learning and optimization. Step 8 is not the end of the process; it is where market data and feedback are progressively converted into long-term business relationships while also creating input for the next development cycle.

FROM “FINDING BUYERS” TO “BUILDING A MARKET”

VTR does not view a customer list or a single Business Matching meeting as the destination. The value lies in a continuous process: UNDERSTAND THE MARKET → IDENTIFY THE RIGHT CUSTOMERS → CREATE CONTACT → VALIDATE NEEDS → CONNECT → FOLLOW UP → DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS.

One meeting may create an opportunity. A well-managed follow-up process is what can turn that opportunity into a market.
